2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT MOUNT MUHABURA HIKING EXPERIENCE) DAY 1: ARRIVAL & PRE-HIKE PREPARATION (KIGALI → MUSANZE / KINIGI) You depart Kigali in the morning for a scenic drive to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Day Highlights: Arrival in Musanze after 2.5–3 hours drive Check-in at lodge near Kinigi / park headquarters Relaxation and altitude adjustment Full briefing with your guide on hike difficulty and timing Gear check (boots, rain gear, hydration preparation) Early dinner and rest (very important for summit success) Overnight: Stay at a lodge close to Volcanoes National Park for early morning access. DAY 2: MOUNT MUHABURA SUMMIT HIKE & RETURN Mount Muhabura Early morning transfer to park headquarters for registration and briefing before starting the climb. MORNING: START OF HIKE Begin hike around 7:00–8:00 AM Immediate steep ascent with no gradual warm-up Transition through farmland edge into volcanic slopes Fast gain in altitude with continuous climbing MID-HIKE: STEEP ASCENT ZONE Long, demanding uphill sections with minimal flat terrain Vegetation changes from forest to open volcanic landscape Frequent rest breaks required due to altitude and steepness Guided pacing is essential to avoid exhaustion SUMMIT EXPERIENCE Reach summit at 4,127m altitude One of the clearest panoramic viewpoints in the Virunga range Views of Lake Edward, Rwanda highlands, and neighboring volcanoes Short summit stay due to wind and cold conditions DESCENT Long downhill return (often more tiring on knees than ascent) Careful pacing required to avoid injury Return to park headquarters late afternoon RETURN Transfer back to Musanze or Kigali depending on schedule Optional overnight extension in Musanze for recovery
